Year 8 students enthusiastically prepared a short puppet theatre performance, which they presented to younger students. Through this activity, they worked on creativity, oral expression, teamwork and values such as respect and positive coexistence. It was a very enriching process for them, both in terms of creating the story and taking on the responsibility of performing for a younger audience. We hope the younger students enjoyed it as much as Year 8 enjoyed preparing and performing it. MYP criteria developed Criterion A: AnalysingStudents had to understand and analyse stories, characters and situations in order to create the puppet theatre script. This particularly involved: understanding messages and narrative texts; identifying themes, characters and values; and interpreting communicative situations adapted to a young audience. Criterion B: OrganisingDuring the preparation of the performance, students organised ideas and structured the script content coherently. This developed: the planning of oral and written texts; the logical sequencing of events; and cohesion and coherence in discourse. Criterion C: Producing textThe creation of the script and the theatrical performance involved producing texts with a clear communicative purpose. This included: creative writing; adapting language to the audience; using expressive and dialogue-based resources; and speaking in public. Criterion D: Using languageThe dramatisation enabled students to put the correct and effective use of language into practice in real contexts. Students developed: pronunciation and intonation; vocabulary appropriate to the context; grammatical accuracy; and oral interaction and communication skills. In addition, the activity supported MYP Approaches to Learning such as teamwork, creativity, social skills and communication skills.
