Last week, we held our Granda Scientific Chef event, a wonderful celebration of learning, creativity and collaborative work across the whole Primary School. Every year group took part in this interdisciplinary experience, presenting projects linked to Science, English and Computer Science, and sharing their learning with families, teachers and special guests. Year 1 pupils explored the fascinating world of materials. As part of their project, they investigated the properties and uses of different materials and even designed and created the tableware later used by the Year 4 and Year 5 chefs to plate their dishes. Their creativity and teamwork were truly impressive. Year 2 focused on plants, photosynthesis, aromatic herbs and vegetable growing. Through practical experiences, students deepened their understanding of how plants grow and why they are so important for life. Their presentations included herbs and vegetables they had grown and cared for themselves. Year 3 learners investigated electricity, learning about circuits, conductors and insulating materials. Their interactive presentations showed excellent scientific thinking and sparked the curiosity of everyone attending. Year 4 centred their project on milk, exploring its properties, different types and processing. As part of their challenge, pupils made ice cream live in front of their families and a very demanding jury, using scientific techniques related to changes in the state of matter. Year 5 presented their learning on nutrition, the digestive system and food groups. They also prepared delicious hummus live, demonstrating both their culinary skills and their knowledge of healthy eating. Finally, Year 6 explored energy and sustainability, even creating homemade solar ovens that reflected their innovative thinking and environmental awareness. The success of Granda Scientific Chef was made possible thanks to the enthusiasm of all our students and the dedication of their teachers, making the event an unforgettable experience for the whole school community. Year 6 learners made their own solar ovens by hand as part of last term’s Full Power project. To build them, they used simple materials such as pizza boxes, aluminium foil, black card and cling film, learning that sustainable solutions can be created with accessible resources. For several weeks, they were unable to test them due to the lack of sunshine. However, when the weather improved, they had the opportunity to go out into the playground and see whether their ovens really worked. They used butter, chocolate, marshmallows and even an egg, observing how the sun’s heat was able to cook the food. They also shared their work with families during the Granda Chef event, proudly presenting the whole process and the final result. It was a highly enriching and collaborative experience, through which pupils learnt about sustainability, solar energy and the importance of teamwork while putting scientific concepts into practice.
