Year 8 students have completed a visual synthesis project in Religious Education, focused on the figure of Jesus and the New Testament. The activity culminated in the creation of a digital or paper infographic, in which students had to organise, represent and clearly communicate the learning covered during recent lessons. Project objectiveThe main purpose of this activity was for students to understand the importance of the figure of Jesus within Christianity and to be able to identify some of the fundamental elements of the New Testament. Through the creation of an infographic, students worked on information synthesis, artistic expression and visual communication, integrating religious, symbolic and personal content into their own final piece. To do this, the work had to include an original title that brought together what they had learnt, the identification and representation of the Tetramorph symbols linked to the four evangelists, a comparative table structured through icons and a personal and critical conclusion on the innovative message of Jesus in history. IB learner profile attributes developedThis project fosters several IB learner profile attributes, including: Inquirers, as students search for, select and organise information related to Jesus, the evangelists and the New Testament; Thinkers, as they interpret the meaning of Christian symbols and reflect on the message of Jesus in its historical and religious context; Communicators, as they present information clearly, visually and creatively, both digitally and on paper; Knowledgeable, as they learn about key aspects of the Christian tradition and its cultural and historical influence; Reflective, as they develop a personal conclusion on the innovative nature of Jesus’ message; Principled and respectful, as they approach religion with an attitude of respect, understanding and appreciation of spiritual and cultural heritage. Approaches to Learning (ATL) skillsThroughout the project, students developed important Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills: research skills, including searching for, selecting and organising relevant information about the New Testament, the evangelists and the figure of Jesus; critical thinking skills, through the interpretation of symbols, comparison of information and development of a reasoned personal conclusion; communication skills, by presenting ideas in an organised way using visual resources, icons, drawings, tables and short texts; creative skills, through the design of an original infographic, paying attention to composition, clarity and artistic expression; and self-management skills, through planning their work, making decisions about the format and reviewing the final product before submission. Through this activity, we aim to help students not only gain a deeper understanding of the figure of Jesus and the New Testament but also interpret his message from a personal, critical and respectful perspective.
